We live in a world where social media rules our lives. Not a day goes by without checking Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, browsing the latest trends, or keeping up with other people’s lives. More on houstonka.
New bloggers and TikTokers quickly rise to fame, amassing millions of followers. However, not everyone makes it to the top—why is that?
The secret lies in presenting oneself well, offering genuine and interesting content, and understanding what the audience wants. Liza Koshy started her journey on Vine, and wherever she went afterward, she attracted a massive audience.
What is it about her that captivates viewers? What other milestones has she achieved at such a young age?
About Her Carefree Childhood
Liza Koshy, a Houston native born on March 31, 1996, could not have imagined growing up to be one of America’s most popular bloggers and comedians. Her mother, of German descent, is a yoga instructor, and her father, of Indian descent, is an oil executive. Liza also has two older sisters.
Koshy attended a dual-language program, where English and Spanish were mandatory. After graduating from Lamar High School, she enrolled at the University of Houston to study marketing and business. However, she eventually dropped out and moved to Los Angeles, believing there were better opportunities for her there.
Liza often jokingly refers to herself as “milk chocolate” or “a little brown girl with big dreams.” Her distinctive appearance has become a hallmark, making her easily recognizable.
How She Gained Millions of Followers

In 2013, Koshy, under the pseudonym «Lizzza» began posting short and funny videos on Vine. These quick sketches helped her gather a large following. By the time Vine shut down in 2017, she had amassed 7 million followers.
Despite losing her Vine following, Koshy didn’t dwell on it. She quickly adapted by shifting her content to YouTube, where her comedic talent continued to shine. Her fame skyrocketed when she posted a video interviewing President Barack Obama, drawing in even more subscribers.
Many people admired her excellent sense of humor, her ability to laugh at herself, her well-mannered and eloquent demeanor, and her knack for addressing serious topics such as societal pressures and anxiety with a lighthearted touch.
By 2017, Liza had reached 10 million subscribers, and by 2021, her following had grown to over 17 million. She also runs a second YouTube channel with nearly 8 million subscribers, and combined views from both channels exceed 3 billion. Additionally, she has millions of followers on Facebook and Twitter.
Showcasing Her Acting Talent
Years of consistently filming and editing videos paid off for Liza when she was offered a role in a television series.
In 2016, she appeared in the series Freakish, playing Violet Adams. From there, she received numerous offers to act in films and other TV shows.
She has appeared in various projects, including My Little Pony: A New Generation, Crow: The Legend, and Jingle Ballin’.
Her comedic skills shone the brightest, as comedy seemed to be her true calling. For her contributions to media and her acting performances, Liza has won numerous awards and accolades.
In 2017, Koshy hosted the live broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards, proving her talent as a charismatic TV host. She has also interviewed global celebrities multiple times.
Personal Life
In 2015, Koshy began dating fellow YouTuber David Dobrik. Although his following was smaller than Liza’s, the couple frequently shared their relationship with their audiences, often collaborating on funny and everyday videos that intrigued fans. However, in 2018, the couple broke up, and their joint YouTube projects ended.
