Houston is home to the Pursuit Center, a modern social and psychological support center for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This center serves children with inclusion needs from across Texas. As of 2024, the center supported more than 1,000 children and adults, providing comprehensive services such as education, socialization, job placement, and medical support.
The center’s programs include preparing high school students with disabilities in Houston ISD, Alief ISD, Katy ISD, and Galena Park ISD, as well as job skills training, social development groups, and healthcare services in partnership with Baylor Transition Medicine Clinic.
In 2024 alone, the Pursuit Center helped 13 individuals with disabilities secure employment. The center also organizes over 35 monthly social and recreational events that promote youth integration into society. Additionally, it oversees 22 residential homes where 114 adults with full-time care needs live.
The Pursuit Center plays a vital role, offering young people with intellectual disabilities opportunities for social adaptation, self-realization through employment, and active community participation.
Summerhouse Houston: Empowering Young Adults with IDD
Another key organization is Summerhouse Houston, founded in 2011. It provides support to young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Summerhouse Houston offers creative daily programs designed to build social, emotional, and professional skills. These programs are tailored to individual needs and strengths. The organization also runs a supported employment program that helps participants find and maintain jobs by partnering with local employers and the Texas Workforce Commission.

Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital: Modern Psychiatric Care
It’s also important to highlight Houston Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, which specializes in psychiatric care and social support for children, adolescents, and adults dealing with mental health disorders and addictions.
This facility was established as part of the development of the local mental health system. Its primary goal was to provide professional care for individuals facing acute psychiatric conditions, crises, and complex behavioral disorders.
