How Animals Affect Our Mental and Physical Health: A Houston Psychologist Answers

Having a pet is always a great responsibility, both for the animal and for yourself. Not everybody is prepared to take a serious step like this. It’s especially hard when you haven’t yet had such an opportunity and experience. Read more at houstonka.

Houston psychologist Elizabeth Seabolt-Esparza says that those who need or want to have a pet should definitely get one. In case you have doubts and aren’t sure if it’s the right choice, put these thoughts aside. The only thing you’ll probably regret is not making the decision sooner.

Houston Pets

You can often meet dog owners on the streets of Houston. Dogs are among the most beloved pets in this city. Even Elizabeth herself says that she has a dog and can confirm from personal experience that it’s definitely worth all the changes you’ll have to deal with.

The French Bulldog is probably the most popular and common dog breed in Houston. These funny pets easily get along with people, are effortlessly trainable and feel perfectly comfortable living in a flat.

Golden Retrievers are incredibly intelligent and friendly. A large number of Houstoners own this breed too.

It’s also impossible not to mention dogs like Poodles, German Shepherds and English Bulldogs. These animals adapted to a comfortable life in Texas. You can often see them and their owners walking in city parks and streets.

Why It’s Better to Have a Pet Than Not to Have One

People who rarely came into contact with animals as children are often hesitant to adopt them as adults. Someone who grew up around cats, dogs, or other pets from an early age will be much more willing to take the step in the future. Indeed, getting a pet isn’t just a trip to the store but a big life change. You basically acquire a full-fledged family member.

We are aware that pets require a lot of time, effort, and resources. You have to take them with you on long trips. They are completely under your protection. These are the reasons that often sound like excuses or mere unwillingness to have a pet in the house.

However, life definitely changes for the better with the appearance of a new house resident and, in fact, a family member.

A psychologist from Houston says there’s no doubt people can improve their physical and mental state with what she considers to be a good change in life. You might think that life isn’t divided into “before and after” and continues as before. But this is not the case.

First of all, if you’ve adopted a dog, you should definitely walk him outdoors. If there’s no park or lawn nearby, you take a walk around the house. Daily walks are good both for the pet and the owner. Increased physical activity and time spent outdoors affect your physical health and general well-being in the most positive way.

Secondly, it’s been scientifically proven that a cat or dog can reduce the production of cortisol, the stress hormone. Instead, your body produces oxytocin, which ensures good health.

If you are going through a difficult breakup or feeling lonely in an empty home, an animal will distract you from sad thoughts. As you know, cats are the best “antidepressants” for humans. Purring sounds are incredibly pleasing and petting feels soothing. Dogs, on the other hand, with their happy disposition and loyalty make you realize that you are no longer alone, and someone will always be waiting for you at home.

The most touching thing is that they love us truly, not for some specific reason but unconditionally. They completely accept us as we are. To a certain extent, we can say that furry pets teach us how to love.

Playing active games with your pets, watching their hilarious shenanigans and noticing oddities and peculiarities in their character is priceless. How can you even talk about sadness with these beautiful creatures around?
