Dinner Inside a Floor-to-Ceiling Ocean

Downtown Houston has no shortage of rooms with a view. This one dispenses with the view altogether and gives you a wall of moving water instead. The dining room is built around a floor-to-ceiling cylindrical tank that the restaurant puts at some 150,000 gallons, home to more than a hundred species, so the show starts before anyone takes the first order. Reticulated rays drift past at eye level, moray eels watch from the rockwork, and a giant grouper of over 250 pounds cruises through like a regular who owns the place. The oddities are the best part: a napoleon wrasse brought from Australia, and shovel-nosed guitarfish that look like a design error nature never corrected.

The Concept · The Story

The restaurant anchors the Downtown Aquarium, a Landry’s development that began with a 1999 City of Houston call for proposals to do something with two derelict civic landmarks: the old Fire Station No. 1 and the Central Waterworks pumping plant beside it. Landry’s plan beat a rival bid in 2000, the firehouse was kept structurally intact, the waterworks hall was converted into a shark and ray exhibit, and the six-acre site opened in 2003. The complex now keeps over 200 species in around half a million gallons of water and holds accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. That is the difference worth knowing: the tank beside your table is a working exhibit with keepers and scheduled feeding dives, not an aquarium-shaped prop.

What to Order

The kitchen plays Gulf Coast seafood straight. Openers that earn their place are the shrimp and crab dip, the Calamari Fritto Misto, the Castaway Combo and oysters on the half shell. Mains stay with the Gulf: sauteed redfish, grilled mahi mahi with shrimp, herb-crusted Atlantic salmon, shrimp scampi ravioli and the Louisiana Cajun pasta. Groups tend to converge on a platter, and there are several to argue over: the Broiled Captain’s Platter, the Mariner’s Mixed Grill, the fried seafood platter, all built on stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab, scallops and hush puppies. Anyone indifferent to fish is covered by the ribeye, the steak and lobster, or the outsized Megalodon Burger. The children’s menu is written in the same language as the room: Shrimpkens, Barracuda Mini Cheeseburgers, Sand Dollar Pizza and a Paint Sharkey Krispy Treat that doubles as an activity.

The Space

Most of the light in the room comes off the water, which turns everything a deep aquarium blue and makes phone cameras behave badly. Seating is tiered around the cylinder so the far tables still see the fish, and the sightlines were engineered that way on purpose. It is polished enough for an anniversary and robust enough for a stroller and a birthday crowd, with banquet space for larger parties. Upstairs, the second-floor Dive Lounge works as a pre-dinner stop or a drink before a Theater District curtain. Outside, the rest of the complex keeps going: a Ferris wheel, a carousel, the Stingray Reef touch pool, the white tiger habitat of the Maharaja Temple, and the Shark Voyage train that runs through a 200,000-gallon shark tank.

Good to Know

Do we need a reservation? For weekend evenings and any party larger than four, yes. Tank-side seating goes first and walk-ins take what is left.

Do we have to buy aquarium tickets to eat here? No. The restaurant is entered without admission; exhibits and rides are ticketed separately.

Is every table next to the glass? Not literally, but the room is tiered around the tank, and tank-side is the one request worth making when you book.

Is there anything for someone who does not eat seafood? Steaks, chicken pastas, burgers, wraps and salads run the whole length of the menu.

Will children actually sit still here? This is one of the few celebration rooms in the city designed around them, and the divers, the rays and a menu of their own usually do the work.
