Aquarium Restaurant — an Ocean in the Middle of Downtown
Some family dinners need more than a good menu — they need a showstopper nobody argues with. This downtown landmark delivers one by seating everyone around a colossal cylindrical aquarium, where a slow parade of sharks, rays and shimmering schools does the entertaining before the bread basket even lands.
The Backstory
The Aquarium Restaurant crowns the Downtown Aquarium complex, a Landry’s production that turned a corner of downtown Houston into a marine-themed playground: exhibits, rides, an arcade and, at its heart, a dining room built around a 150,000-gallon tank. More than a hundred species live behind the glass, from giant grouper to a rare Napoleon wrasse, and scuba divers drop in for feedings that stop conversation at every table.
What to Order
Start with the shrimp-and-crab dip, then head for the seafood platters — stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab, grilled fish and scallops — or a simply grilled snapper. Cajun pasta and salmon specials earn steady praise, steaks and burgers keep carnivores content, and the fried alligator remains the most-photographed item in the room after the fish themselves. Desserts are tall, frosted and made for sharing.
The Space
The room glows a deep, cinematic blue: two tiers of booths and set tables wrapped around the tank, with sightlines engineered so even the far seats catch the action. It is polished enough for a celebration and forgiving enough for a stroller. Outside wait a Ferris wheel and a little train that trundles through a shark tunnel — the natural encore.
Who It’s For
Birthdays, graduations, visiting grandparents and any occasion where delight matters more than hush. It is one of the rare special-occasion rooms in Houston where children are not merely tolerated but designed for.
Good to Know
Can we celebrate a birthday here? Yes — the team handles celebrations daily and can arrange desserts; large groups should book ahead.
How long is the wait without a booking? Weekend evenings can run long; weekday lunches are the calm window.
Are there options for non-seafood eaters? Plenty — steaks, chicken, pasta, burgers and salads share the menu with the fish.
Is the aquarium itself included with dinner? Exhibits and rides are ticketed separately; dining requires no admission.
Does the tank really have sharks? Yes — along with rays, eels and a grouper the size of a coffee table; feeding dives happen on a regular schedule.
